Meet the Sailor: Richard Lang of Bangarang
Celebrating Life, Resilience, and the Joy of Slow Sailing
At Jackson Creek Marina, every docked boat has a story—and this week, we had the pleasure of welcoming back a familiar face and seasoned solo sailor, Richard Lang, aboard his beloved vessel, Bangarang.
Richard is sailing the Chesapeake after a meaningful milestone—his first voyage back on the water after a long recovery from illness. His journey began just down the bay at Severn Yachting Center in Mobjack Bay, and this maiden sail marks a triumphant return to the lifestyle he loves. Next stop? Yorktown for the fireworks and then meandering through the Bay for the summer, with a special trip planned to celebrate his 70th birthday with his family in August.
Richard’s been sailing Bangarang for five years, and while she may not be fast, she’s faithful.
“She’s steadier on her feet than I am,” he jokes with a smile. “I’m a solo sailor… a slow sailor.”
When asked about the most memorable stops on his journey so far, Richard mentioned a quiet appreciation for Yankee Point, but his eyes lit up talking about Jackson Creek Marina—a place he’s returned to time and time again.
“I’ve been here three times and I love the environment. It’s welcoming. The anchorages are peaceful, the restaurant is great, I love using the bikes, the lounge—it’s my kind of people here.”
As a solo cruiser, Richard thrives on the connections and conversations that happen naturally along the docks and around the marina.
“Don’t set a timeline,” he advises new cruisers. “Be flexible in what you do—and enjoy the people you meet.”
At Jackson Creek Marina, we’re proud to be part of stories like Richard’s—stories of healing, adventure, resilience, and camaraderie on the water.
We’ll be cheering for Richard as he continues sailing the Bay this summer—and we look forward to welcoming him home again soon.
Fair winds, Richard—and Happy 70th!
